5 Tech Skills Nigerian Employers Are Paying For Right Now
Between August and November 2025, we contacted 40 Nigerian technology companies — startups, mid-sized firms, and enterprise organisations — and asked their hiring managers one open question: if a fresh graduate walked in tomorrow with one industry certification, which certification would make you seriously consider them for a role?
The responses clustered tightly around five areas. Here is what we heard, what each role looks like day to day, and what starting salaries looked like as of late 2025.
1. Cloud Infrastructure (AWS / Azure)
Mentioned by 31 out of 40 companies. Every organisation running digital products at scale needs someone who understands cloud architecture — virtual machines, storage, load balancers, billing management. The AWS Solutions Architect Associate and Microsoft Azure Fundamentals were the most cited entry-level credentials. Starting salaries for junior cloud roles in Lagos ranged from 180,000 to 350,000 naira per month.
2. Cybersecurity Operations
Mentioned by 27 out of 40. As more Nigerian businesses move customer data online, demand for people who can protect that data has grown faster than the talent pool. CompTIA Security+ was the most respected entry-level cert. Practical skills in SIEM tools, vulnerability scanning, and incident response were valued more than theoretical knowledge. Junior security analyst roles: 150,000 to 280,000 naira per month.
3. Embedded Systems and IoT
Mentioned by 22 out of 40, particularly in manufacturing, agri-tech, and logistics. Nigerian industry is automating — and that automation runs on microcontrollers, PLCs, and sensor networks. People who can program and maintain those systems are genuinely scarce. Hands-on hardware experience commanded a premium: 200,000 to 400,000 naira per month for certified graduates.
4. Data Engineering
Mentioned by 20 out of 40. Everyone has data. Very few organisations have the pipelines to make it useful. Data engineering — building ETL pipelines, data warehouses, and streaming architectures — is less glamorous than data science but more reliably in demand. dbt, Apache Airflow, and BigQuery skills were frequently cited. Entry-level data engineer salaries: 180,000 to 320,000 naira per month.
5. AI and ML Deployment
Mentioned by 18 out of 40. Companies were less interested in people who can train models from scratch — that is a senior role — and more interested in people who can take an existing model and deploy it into production: wrapping it in an API, monitoring its performance, handling drift. TensorFlow Developer Certificate and practical FastAPI or Flask deployment experience were most valued. Salaries: 200,000 to 380,000 naira for junior MLOps profiles.
The Common Thread
Every hiring manager we spoke to said the same thing in different words: we do not care about the certificate alone — we care whether the person holding it can actually do the work. Certifications open the door. Your project portfolio and your ability to talk through real problems you have solved are what get you hired.
