My First Week at Prime Robotics
I almost did not apply. The website looked professional, sure, but I had been burned before by a so-called hands-on tech course that turned out to be forty hours of PowerPoint slides and a certificate emailed as a PDF. Part of me nearly convinced myself Prime Robotics would be the same.

Day One: No Slides, No Nonsense
We walked in at 8 AM on a Monday. Before anyone had finished settling in, the instructor placed a kit on each desk: an Arduino Uno, a breadboard, a handful of resistors, some LEDs, and a USB cable. No welcome presentation. No icebreaker games. He wrote one sentence on the whiteboard: Make one LED blink. Then he sat down.
I stared at the components for a full minute. The student next to me plugged in his Arduino immediately and started wiring. I asked if he had done this before. He said no — he had watched a five-minute YouTube video on the bus ride in. That was the moment I understood what kind of school this was.
By Wednesday: The LED Matrix
Two days in, we had moved from single blinking LEDs to controlling an 8x8 LED matrix. The catch: you cannot just plug 64 LEDs directly into an Arduino — it does not have that many pins, and it cannot source that much current. We learned about multiplexing, about how you can trick the human eye by switching rows on and off so fast it looks like everything is lit at once.
Writing that code — loops within loops, timing delays, bit manipulation — felt like the first time I truly understood what a microcontroller was doing. Not theory read from a textbook. The actual physical thing, right in front of me, responding to code I had typed ten seconds before.
Thursday: My First Sensor
The obstacle-avoidance sensor is deceptively simple: it shoots out infrared light and detects the reflection. If something is close, the output pin goes LOW. If the path is clear, it goes HIGH. Three wires. Done. But combining it with motor control — making a small robot turn away from walls without spinning in confused circles — took the rest of the day and most of my patience.
I connected one sensor backwards and fried it. The instructor did not scold me; he said you will never do that again and handed me a replacement. He was right.
What Friday Felt Like
By Friday afternoon I had a small wheeled robot that would drive forward, detect a wall, reverse, turn, and continue on a new path. It was not elegant. It bumped into corners. It occasionally forgot what direction it was supposed to be going. But it worked, and I had built it from scratch, starting from zero four days earlier.
